Lecture Introduction
This lecture will examine the assumptions and stereotypes held by many western critics and educators about the contemporary art of Taiwan. Rather than comprehending the multiplicity of influences impacting Taiwanese artists, this history is often reduced to a study of "Before" and "After" authoritarian rule. However, new art from Taiwan is positioned to play a significant role in the development of new art movements, due to its amalgamation of an inherited classical art tradition, the impact of colonialism, and the existence of an indigenous culture. This complexity creates a unique position for Taiwanese artists to reflect on and incorporate the leading themes of 21st Century Art.

Speaker Introduction
Barbara Pollack (芭芭拉·波拉克) is an arts writer and curator with a focus on artists responding to socio-political crises, in the United States and Asia. She has published three books and over 100 essays on recent art movements in China. Pollack has also consistently curated shows at museums and galleries, in the US and China, including the groundbreaking Mirror Image: A Generation on the Rise at the Asia Society Museum New York in 2022. Based on her research in this field, she received two grants from the Asian Cultural Council and the prestigious Creative Capital/Warhol Foundation arts writers' grant. Pollack is also the co-founder of Art at a Time Like This Inc., a nonprofit that provides platforms for free expression for a global range of artists.
